Une vie dédiée à un art de lumière : exposition en hommage à Michel Eltschinger
Michel Eltschinger, one of the most important Swiss stained-glass painters of our time and a central figure in the history of the Vitromusée Romont, died on 16 January 2023. This special exhibition will show selected stained glass from the collection of the Vitromusée Romont in his honour and pay tribute to his importance for stained glass in the 20th and 21st centuries.
For 70 years, Michel Eltschinger devoted his life to stained glass with a rare humility. As an apprentice in Herbert Fleckner’s workshop, which he joined somewhat by chance, he very quickly recognised the magic of the craft. Technically trained by Joseph Keller, it was from Yoki and Albert Chavaz that he learned the finer points of this art of light: the value of lead lines, the integration of stained glass into architecture, the choice of colours, their chromatic values, their intensity and the subtleties of shading. With a precise and sensitive eye, Michel Eltschinger has worked for almost 80 artists from Switzerland and abroad, creating thousands of stained glass windows in this country, but also in France, Germany, Italy, Israel and the Seychelles.
