Espace Michel Eltschinger
In 2025, the Vitromusée Romont is redesigning and dedicating its cultural mediation workshop to Michel Eltschinger (1938–2023), a leading glassmaker in the Fribourg and international scene in the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century.
Trained from 1953 onwards in Herbert Fleckner’s workshop in Fribourg, he set up his own business fifteen years later in Villars-sur-Glâne. During his long career, he produced works by numerous artists from all walks of life, including Teddy Aeby, Jean Bazaine, Pierre Chevalley, Alfred Manessier, Isabelle Tabin-Darbellay and Yoki. He was inspired by the latter and Dr Fasel to embark on the adventure of creating the Musée du Vitrail (the former name of the Vitromusée Romont) in 1981.
The Espace Michel Eltschinger, which notably displays stained glass windows he created for renowned artists, is designed as a place for the general public to learn about glass techniques. To lead the space, artists are regularly invited to show the public how they work with glass through demonstrations or residencies. Various workshops are also offered throughout the year.
Michel Eltschinger Fund
In order to finance these activities, we have created the Michel Eltschinger Fund, which helps to keep this space for creativity and encounters alive. Take part in this initiative and become a partner of the Vitromusée Romont by making a donation.
In the hall, a stained glass window specially designed by Swiss artist Daniel Stettler using glass from Michel’s workshop displays the names of the donors.
Donations of CHF 100 or more can be made using this QR payment slip.
